After testing dozens of "Youtube Auto Quality" extensions finally one that really works :-)
Probably the only one working at the time (any others work for half a minute or not at all).

I wonder why several hundred thousand people (the users of non-working auto-quality extensions together) are not even aware that their extension always fails.

Drawback: I need to review the source-code to be sure it's not spyware!
(note that the publisher has not provided any information about the collection or usage of your data)
If I need to edit this extenion's code, I will come back and edit this review too.

I've been manually changing the video quality to maximum for years and I'm so glad that I found this masterpiece.

Exactly what I needed!
I have a 500MB fiber internet and youtube always put the video at 480p. Changing it was very annoying. Thanks to the developer.
